The Monthly Memory September 2021: Finally Our Wedding Reception

September is one of the great transition months. Schools reopen, the weather starts to cool, and New England’s greatest season begins. The fall is my favorite season and September is great for doing fun fall traditions. The leaves are just starting to turn here in southern New England, and that with the cool air makes it the best season for afternoon walks. Cozy weather has finally arrived. September was a great and packed month for us, so his one is going to contain a few memories.

The Big One: Our Long Overdue Reception

My wife and I got married in June 2020. We had to forego the formal reception with first dances and toasts. Instead we had a smaller affair in my parents’ backyard. It was a beautiful day filled with joy for us. We planned on having a reception later on, and it was held this month! Our guest list was much smaller than the original, but everyone there had a great time. We had our first dance, did the father/daughter and mother/son dances, and the best man/maid of honor both gave great speeches. I’m partial to the best man speech, maybe because my older brother said nice things about me. It was a wonderful night and one we didn’t think would happen after the boys were born.

After (and During) Apple Picking

In September we participated in one of the great New England fall pastimes of apple picking. It was of course the twins’ first time going. While we picked ourselves a healthy bag of fresh apples, the boys enjoyed grabbing the branches and pulling them towards their mouths. As they’re big fans of the color orange, they had a blast while we took pictures of them chilling among the rows of ripe pumpkins. And after apple picking (nailed the Robert Frost reference) we enjoyed cider donuts and my mom’s homemade apple crisp.

This Month's Frugal Fail

This month, my work held a 5k fun run/3k fun walk. Since many of my coworkers were participating, I decided to as well. Despite the fact that I haven’t run in over a year due to shin splints/general apathy, I signed up for the 5k. I ran most of it but I walked up some hills. I certainly paid for it later. My legs were killing me for the rest of the week. The frugal fail is related to this brief story. The run was during work and I forgot to bring any workout clothes. So I stopped at Walmart to buy the cheapest workout ensemble I could find. It ended up being about $15. Not the most damaging frugal fail, but alas, it is a fail nonetheless and I must report it.

My September Reading List

I’ve gotten through all or part of a couple books this month. Besides making more progress in The Nicomachean Ethics, I’ve also been back in the world of popular history and cooking. Salt, Fat, Acid Heat has been a fun read about how to use these four core ingredients of cooking better. I’ve had the mixed results that the book tells you to expect while learning. My wife was very kind when eating salty scrambled eggs. I also read The Devil in the White City, about the 1892 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. It also tells the story of an infamous serial killer operating near the fair. Overall an interesting read. I definitely enjoyed the serial killer part much less than the stories about putting together the massive event in only two years. All links are affiliate links.

September Wrap Up

The boys turning 6 months old this month was a huge wake up to just how fast time passes. It’s baffling that they’ve already been here 6 months. They both sit now and are quickly learning how to scoot and crawl. It’s amazing to watch them grow.

Marisa was interviewed to be on the Twinaversity podcast! I’ll be sure to update this when it’s released, so look forward to that coming out in the future.

I recently started selling some baseball and football cards that I have. After about a month of selling them, I’ve made about $45 dollars. I only list a couple at a time on ebay and most of them are nothing too special. Turning things that sat in the attic into $45 is pretty sweet though. Plus it reminds me of all the fun I had as a kid and teen collecting sports cards.

That’s all I have for this month! As we march into October and its wonderful sweater weather, don’t forget to eat your weight in pumpkin bread! I know I’ve already started to.

  1. I thoroughly enjoy reading your son’s post about his life/family. It is especially nice to remember having been in SFX cry room together when our children were younger and to now see them with children of their own!! Thanks for sharing this!!!
